What to know about your Bone Marrow and/or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) procedure?
- Both procedures are designed to stimulate the body’s healing response and, therefore, will take 3-6 months for regeneration to take place and see optimal outcomes.
- In the initial steps of healing, inflammation is often a targeted goal to kick off the healing cascade.
- Impeding the inflammatory cascade may hinder optimal outcomes from the Bone Marrow/PRP injection.
With that in mind, we advise our patients to hold the following medications as written below:
Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs):
- Ibuprofen
- Naproxen
- Diclofenac
- Meloxicam
- Celecoxib
- Etodolac
- Indomethacin
- Ketorolac
- Nabumetone
Stop 7-10 days before the procedure
Avoid restarting for at least 1-2 weeks after.
Supplements:
- Fish oil
- Turmeric
- Ginger
- Garlic
- Ginkgo
- Vitamin E
Steroids:
Oral: Hold 4 weeks prior to your procedure
- Prednisone
- Prednisolone
- Methylprednisolone
- Hydrocortisone
- Triamcinolone
- Betamethasone
- Dexamethasone
Corticosteroid Injections: Hold 4 weeks prior to the same region as the bone marrow/PRP procedure.
If you are taking blood thinners, including aspirin, discuss with your provider if these need to be held in advance of your procedure.
What can I use post-procedurally for pain control?
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be safely used without compromising the outcome of the Bone Marrow/PRP injection.
- In certain cases, ice can be used for symptomatic relief.
- Your provider will review prescription medication options for controlling post-procedure pain as needed.
Things to do in advance of the procedure:
- Hydration is crucial to providing healthy blood/marrow products. We recommend you increase your water intake 48 hours before the procedure.
- Plan for someone to accompany you to the procedure and drive you home.
- Arrange for groceries and other necessities to be readily available for several days post-procedure due to expected soreness/mild discomfort.
- Avoid alcohol 24-48 hours prior to injection.
What to expect after my procedure:
- Increased soreness/discomfort 3-7 days post procedure.
- Gradual return to activity. Your provider will discuss your specific goals and the protocol for returning to exercise/sports.
